DuPage County Marriage Index 1839 to 1932

The index is available to our MEMBERS ONLY. Log in to the Member section then click on the Marriage Index link.

The DuPage County Marriage Index was initiated by DCGS member, Chuck Snail, about 1993. He dedicated several years to the creation of the index and verification of its data. Chuck, along with Rita Schneider and other DCGS volunteers coordinated their efforts with the staff of the DuPage County Clerk’s Records office. DCGS member, Bill Hendron, took over the Marriage Index Project in 2010. Bill’s first goal was to convert the spreadsheet index into a readable Access database. He removed all duplicates and noted any skipped or missing marriage records*. Bill compared his list with the Marriage Index at the Illinois Archives website.

*There is a gap of 22 months where no records exist between Volumes 6SM and 7B, which may involve as many as 1095 records.

The old DuPage County marriage license records offer a wealth of information for the genealogical researcher. This marriage index, a PDF  file, includes 24,238 entries from Volumes A & B and Volumes 1 to 8, covering 1839 to 1932. Marriages are sorted by the grooms’ last name. To find a record for the bride, press CTRL + F, then type in the bride’s surname to search.

If you find a record of interest, you can order it from the DuPage County Clerk's Office.

DuPage County Probate Index 1839 to 1972

This is a first-time release of the Probate and Administration Index of the Circuit Court of DuPage County. The index is available to our MEMBERS ONLY. Log in to the Member section then click on the Probate Index link.

DCGS volunteers indexed the probate log generated by the WPA during the 1930s and continuing in a subsequent volume to 1972. The index headings are box number, page/file number, names, executor or administrator, date of letters and filing date (if known). The index includes administrations, wills, conservatorships and guardianships. Many of the files are contained in boxes. If a box number is present in the index, that number is necessary to locate the file. If there is no box number, the file number is needed.

If a record is found in the index, the file can be obtained at the Circuit Court of DuPage County. You may write to request a photocopy of the file or visit the courthouse. As of 2017, the current cost for a copy of each document in the file is $2.00 for the first page then $.50 for each subsequent page. We suggest that you write for an estimate of the cost, sending a SASE for return mail. If you visit the Circuit Court, you may have to order the copy of the file then return another day to pick it up or have it mailed to you.

Newspaper Abstracts

Genealogical Information from the Hinsdale Doings, compiled by Barbara Ryan.
These abstracts contain births, marriages, and deaths, and information from “gossip” columns. This includes “visits” that include a relationship or a different surname that includes the relationship, that is “… Mrs. John Smith of Buffalo, NY, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. John Brown, in Hinsdale.” Some listings are abstracts or full text. The date at the end of the listing is the date of the issue of the newspaper. The volume and number are shown at the first listing for the date. The symbol in an abstract indicates the information following was in a separate article in the same issue. Oak Forest Cemetery frequently cited in obituaries is the current Bronswood Cemetery located at 3805 North Madison Street, Oak Brook, Illinois. The newspapers are available on microfilm at Hinsdale Public Library but will not be loaned on interlibrary from there. The microfilm can be borrowed on interlibrary loan from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Illinois.
